En Groenlandia<\/strong>, un grupo de cient\u00edficos de la NASA<\/strong> encontr\u00f3 algo que, efectivamente, parece una ciudad sepultada por el hielo<\/strong>. No lo es. Se trata de Camp Century, una base militar estadounidense<\/strong> de tiempos de la Guerra Fr\u00eda<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aunque apenas se est\u00e1 dando a conocer en diferente medios el hallazgo, la imagen que documenta el suceso fue tomada en abril de este a\u00f1o<\/strong>, mientras el equipo de la NASA<\/strong> sobrevolaba Groenlandia<\/strong> realizando estudios de sus capas de hielo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBusc\u00e1bamos el lecho del hielo y sali\u00f3 Camp Century<\/strong>\u201d, explica, en un comunicado<\/a>, Alex Gardner<\/strong>, cient\u00edfico del Laboratorio de Propulsi\u00f3n a Chorro (JPL) de la NASA<\/strong>, que colabor\u00f3 en la direcci\u00f3n del proyecto. \u201cAl principio no sab\u00edamos qu\u00e9 era\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El sobrevuelo se hizo en un avi\u00f3n Gulfstream III<\/strong>, llevando instrumentos de radar para cartografiar la profundidad de la capa de hielo y las del lecho rocoso<\/strong> que yace por debajo de esta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Camp Century, la \u201cciudad bajo el hielo\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

De acuerdo con el comunicado<\/a> citado, Camp Century, tambi\u00e9n conocida como la \u201cciudad bajo el hielo\u201d, es una reliquia de la Guerra Fr\u00eda<\/strong>. Fue construida en 1959 por el Cuerpo de Ingenieros del Ej\u00e9rcito de los Estados Unidos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El proyecto vino con varias excavaciones que terminaron por dar forma a una red de t\u00faneles. Seg\u00fan documenta el sitio especializado, Space.com<\/a>, esta \u201cciudad\u201d fue el emplazamiento de un plan secreto de la Guerra Fr\u00eda<\/strong>, conocido como Proyecto Iceworm<\/strong>, que preve\u00eda la construcci\u00f3n de 4 mil 023 kil\u00f3metros de t\u00faneles<\/strong> que podr\u00edan utilizarse para lanzar misiles bal\u00edsticos contra la Uni\u00f3n Sovi\u00e9tica<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
